As a constituent and a person of faith, I write you today urging you to prioritize a sustainable, peaceful recovery for the country while developing the government’s budget for fiscal year 2022. The Administration has signaled a commitment to investing in green energy and sustainable infrastructure, in affordable healthcare, and in economic support for people struggling with the effects of the pandemic. These are essential investments - and we can find the money we need to make these investments a reality by cutting the bloated defense budget.

Instead, President Biden’s budget also increases military spending. I commend the president for eliminating the Overseas Contingencies Operations fund, but we also need to reduce the topline Pentagon budget. I hope Congress will reject this proposal and instead reduce spending on weapons and war.

Pope Francis has renewed calls for the world’s governments to reallocate funds from military spending to addressing the needs of the poorest and most vulnerable among us. The surest investments in human security are nonviolent: diplomacy, foreign aid, equitable global access to COVID-19 vaccines, and bold measures to address climate change.

I call your attention to another letter, from a diverse coalition of 28 national organizations, detailing $80 billion in recommended cuts, including expensive and unnecessary weapons programs like the F-35 and the B-1 bomber: https://bit.ly/2PFXZgq

We must reduce our nuclear arsenal with an eye toward nuclear disarmament, and jettison expensive programs such as replacing our Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles that move us further from this goal.

This year, Congress must pass appropriations bills that cut the topline Pentagon budget, and re-invests that money into a sustainable, healthy, and peaceful recovery for our communities. I hope you will work to pass such a budget.
