Dear President Biden,

As a person of faith, I ask you to take bold and urgent action to address the climate crisis and promote justice for those most impacted by it.

During this week of virtual gatherings to promote international collaboration against the threat of climate change, I pray the United States will demonstrate its commitment to being a global leader on this critical issue. The United States has an opportunity to meaningfully reengage with international efforts to prevent the worst effects of climate change and protect the Earth for future generations.

Pope Francis has asked that countries like the United States provide “the financial resources and technical assistance needed to help [other countries] deal with climate change and promote sustainable development.” One critical way we can do that is through investing at least $2 billion in the Green Climate Fund, the main international program to help developing countries adapt to climate change.

In addition, I ask you to continue to prioritize reforming the U.S. energy sector and our national infrastructure so as to achieve net-zero climate pollution as quickly as possible. Through investments in better infrastructure and renewable energy, we can also prioritize racial, economic, and gender justice. In making these key transitions, we should support a just transition for impacted workers.

Thank you for your efforts to prioritize protecting and restoring God’s creation and caring for those most affected by the threat of climate change.

During this Earth Day week in which the United States is convening a global leaders summit on climate, I ask you to prioritize legislation that protects our precious Earth and promotes justice for marginalized communities most affected by climate change.

Specifically, I urge you to pass legislation that:

• commits to reaching net-zero climate pollution in the electricity sector by 2035 and economy-wide by 2050
• equitably addresses impacts of the climate crisis in the United States
• modernizes crumbling infrastructure and increases transportation efficiency and decarbonization, while prioritizing racial, economic, and gender justice
• embraces renewable energy and supports a just transition for disproportionately impacted workers
• contributes $2 billion toward the Green Climate Fund
• supports additional multilateral and bilateral funds such as the Global Environment Facility, Adaptation Fund, Renewable Energy program and the Sustainable Landscapes program

As a person of faith, I am concerned about people and communities most affected by the climate crisis both domestically and globally. I urge you to ensure that Congress focuses on these issues through the lenses of equity and justice in the coming months.
