Dear President Biden,

As a person of faith, I believe that we have a responsibility to eradicate global poverty and protect the Earth, our common home. The global community is facing an environmental, economic, and health crisis. The impacts of all three crises falls heaviest on the least responsible and least able to respond – especially in low-and middle-income countries.

As your Administration participates at the upcoming G7 meeting, we ask that you encourage and take the following actions for a global just recovery:

Expand global vaccine access: Thank you for supporting the WHO, COVAX, a TRIPS waiver for global vaccine production and donations of US vaccine stock to ease the global health pandemic. Our country will not fully recover without global access to testing, vaccines, and therapeutics for all. Yet current supply is still not enough.
Please work with G7 leaders to ramp up production of these essential tools.

Support ambitious climate action: Thank you for the recent climate commitments at the Climate Leaders Summit. G7 countries can and must do more such as meeting the Paris finance commitment of $100 billion a year for adaptation and mitigation efforts in low-and middle-income countries and eliminating fossil fuel finance and subsidies.

Support debt relief and IMF special drawing rights: The global wealth gap is predicted to widen as major economies recover thanks to domestic stimulus packages while many poorer countries struggle to return to pre-pandemic income levels. The fastest way for economic relief to reach the most people around the world is by activating the IMF’s emergency relief fund known as Special Drawing Rights and offering relief to countries choking on debt payments.

I am grateful for your commitment to the common good and decisive action – but more still needs to be done and the meeting of the G7 leaders is the right place to do it.
