On November 4, the Trump Administration took the next steps to formally withdraw the United States from the landmark Paris climate agreement, which was signed by 197 countries and which seeks to prevent catastrophic climate change through coordinated action. This commences a yearlong process to officially withdraw from the agreement. Today, ask your U.S. representative and senators to condemn this move.

As the largest historical emitter of greenhouse gases, the United States has a moral obligation to work with other nations to prevent further climate change and to protect vulnerable people and ecosystems experiencing its effects first and worst.

I am deeply troubled by the Trump Administration’s decision to begin the year-long process of leaving the Paris climate agreement. As a person of faith, I believe we have a moral obligation to work with other nations to act against climate change and protect vulnerable people and ecosystems around the world, especially given the United States’ contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions. Scientific evidence increasingly indicates that the failure of nations to act will result in catastrophic climate change that will affect people everywhere, especially the vulnerable and even people right here in this district.

In September, people across the country and the world – especially the younger generations – came together to call for climate action. This week, many leaders of faith-based organizations condemned the decision to withdraw from this important agreement. I urge you to join us in publicly expressing your opposition to this disastrous decision.
