Both the U.S. Catholic Bishops and Pope Francis have called for universal access to the vaccine around the world. With more infectious and intense variants emerging in different parts of the world and even appearing in the United States, we know that the health of residents, the economy, and society cannot recover without global vaccine access.

A waiver of intellectual property rights for COVID-19 vaccines by the World Trade Organization is the fastest and most effective pathway to global vaccine access. Millions of lives could be saved by this decision.

As a person of faith, I urge you to ask the Biden administration to support a TRIPS (intellectual property) waiver specifically focused on COVID-19 recovery at the upcoming World Trade Organization (WTO) meetings to provide the fastest and most effective pathway to global vaccine access. Both the U.S. Catholic Bishops and Pope Francis have called for universal access to the vaccine around the world. As an observer state, the Vatican has spoken in support the waiver proposal from South Africa and India at the WTO.

With more infectious and intense variants emerging in different parts of the world and even appearing in the United States, we know that the health of residents, the economy, and society cannot recover without global vaccine access.

COVID-19 has been devastating for families, economies, and human development in the United States and around the world. In this Easter season, we see the hope of vaccine access to help us recover from the pandemic, but we know that many countries around the world have not yet seen one shipment of vaccines. We believe we are our sisters and brothers’ keepers, and this is one way we can demonstrate it.
