As a person of faith, I urge you to support the extension of the New START treaty between the U.S. and Russia, which is set to expire in 2021. This treaty plays a vital role in helping reduce and limit the nuclear weapons arsenals of the U.S. and Russia and establishes legal frameworks for transparency and verification of compliance with these limits. This treaty has been a cornerstone of nuclear security and must be strengthened and replaced.

During his recent visit to Japan, Pope Francis articulated his hope for a world free of nuclear weapons based on a commitment to protecting the dignity of all life. We know that nuclear weapons are a danger to human life and all creation. I believe our nation must help lead the global nuclear disarmament effort.
