Under the “Remain in Mexico” policy at the U.S.-Mexico border, asylum seekers who reach the United States are returned to Mexico to await their asylum hearings, which are often many months away. Many of them sleep in the streets of Mexican border towns, often with their children, where they are subject to violence and desperate poverty. Urge your members of Congress to oppose the “Remain in Mexico” program and protect asylum seekers.

Subject: Oppose the "Remain in Mexico" Border Policy

Message:

As your constituent, and as a person of faith, I urge you to oppose and rescind funding for the "Remain in Mexico" program, otherwise known as the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP).

I am deeply disturbed that vulnerable asylum seekers, including families with children, are sleeping on the streets of Mexican border towns without access to legal counsel, protection from violence, or basic services as a result of this program. They are forced to wait on the Mexico side of the border for months for their asylum hearings due to this program and our backlogged asylum system.

The program also further restricts access to legal information or counsel for asylum seekers. Legal counsel is nearly impossible to find on the Mexico side of the border right now. Therefore, vulnerable people are forced to defend themselves in court, resulting in even lower asylum acceptance rates than are typical.

Please voice your opposition to this program, including through denying it funding to continue. We must protect the rights and dignity of people seeking safety at our borders.
